Born in Odessa, Ukraine on May 12, 1975, Oleg Shchekin came to the United States to attend The University of Texas at Austin as an undergraduate student in 1993. After earning his bachelor of science degree with high honors and special honors in physics, Oleg continued with his graduate education at the Cockrell School of Engineering focusing on GaAs-based semiconductor quantum dot lasers. Oleg received his master's degree in 1999 and doctorate in 2003, both in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Honors earned while at The University of Texas at Austin include the Ben Streetman Prize and the 2003 Electronic Materials Conference Best Student Paper award. Being passionate about LEDs for lighting, Oleg joined the Advanced Laboratories at Philips Lumileds Lighting Co. During his time there, he has had a chance to participate in and lead development of technologies now being used in billions of LEDs around the world in various products from consumer electronics to automotive and general lighting. Oleg has authored or coauthored more than 70 refereed journal publications and conference proceedings and has been granted seven U.S. patents.

Oleg is a proud three-time graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and his personal hobbies include tennis, sailing, snow sports and motorcycling.
