SharePoint is a web-based collaborative tool to facilitate: document sharing and versioning, calendaring/scheduling, online discussions, event coordination, knowledge sharing, and issue management.

Getting Started with SharePoint

  • An Engineering account. If you do not have an account, please request one.
  • Internet Explorer 5.5 or better. SharePoint does not offer full functionaility to alternative browsers.

Requesting a SharePoint

Please email the ITG Service Desk to request your SharePoint. Please provide the following information:

  • Names, email addresses and Engineering usernames of all team members
  • Course number and section
  • Team name

You will receive an email indicating that your SharePoint is active and ready for use.

Using SharePoint

While SharePoint provides an array of collaborative services, you should remember that SharePoint is simply a web-based tool that should be used like you would any web site.

Like any web site, SharePoint also requires good organization and information architecture.

Web Parts

Every page can be displayed as a web part. A web part is a view of a page. Web parts can be used on other pages. For example, your home page shows the contents of a document library, a list of important links, project contacts, discussion threads, etc.

The title of a web part links to the page represented. The downward facing arrows will reveal additional functionality.

Policy and Service Level Agreement (SLA)

SharePoint account usage should comply with all UT-Austin acceptable use polices. Any violation of these policies will result in immediate termination of the privilege of this service.

SharePoint will nominally be operated 24x7, but regular maintenance windows will be required to maintain the service at optimal levels.

SharePoint sites are backed up for disaster recovery ONLY, please preserve you own work.

Class accounts will be terminated 3 weeks after the end of the semester unless explicitly extended.
