UMBS retirement for staff - 8-1-2012

A few Engineering Staff have not fully migrated their mailbox from the old service (UMBS) to an active service (usually AEMS).

The following email has been sent out to the users in the Engineering Dean's Office and may be sent to others by the individual departmental IT managers.


This is a reminder that the campus University Mailbox Service (UMBS) is being retired for staff on August 1, 2012.  You WILL lose your address and any email in your UMBS mailbox if you do not walk through the steps below.  Please take a few minutes soon to use this tool TODAY.

 The process is simple:

  • Go to the following website and login with your EID - and choose the appropriate option.
  • If you would like to move you messages to Austin Exchange, choose the first option.
    • Under the first option, there will be a new sub-option. 
      • I want my address to be the return address that appears on outbound mail…
      • Select this box if you want your address to be your primary address.  If your primary address is currently, or, DO NOT select this box.
      • You will need to enter you EID password again
      • or your address will be forwarded.
      • You will receive a follow-up email message when the migration is complete. 

Most Engineering staff have already taken care of this, but as of 7/26, there are 26 staff that still needed to take these steps.



New Service Request Form

A new Service Request submission form has been added to the ITG website.  After submitting your request the new form will notify you by email when your ticket is created and again when your request has been resolved.

Upcoming modifications of the UT Austin “@mail” service (UMBS)

The following email is being circulated to the Engineering Dean's Staff and research units regarding upcoming email system changes.

Subject: Upcoming modifications of the UT Austin “@mail” service (UMBS)

Over the next 3 months, UT’s legacy email system, “University Mailbox Service” (UMBS) will be retired.  Don’t worry.  Your email addresses will not change.

You may receive emails or hear from colleagues about the UMBS retirement.  No action is needed for most of the department since almost everyone is using a different, better system called Austin Exchange Messaging Service (AEMS).  The AEMS system will not change.

A few people may need to take specific actions in coordination with your IT staff.  Please wait for contact from your IT staff before making any changes to your email.

As always, be very wary of fake emails (phishing) that want you to supply your username, password and other information. They are trying to hijack your email account to send their own spam.  Deleting these emails is the best option.  If you see one that you are especially concerned about, you can always forward it to for further review by the ITG.
