Hart earns award from international communications society

     Dr. Hillary Hart, senior lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin, was awarded the 1998 Distinguished Chapter Service Award from the Society for Technical Communication. The award recognizes the work of chapter members through their dedication to their chapter and its activities over the years. Hart teaches and researches technical communication in the Department of Civil Engineering.

     The Society for Technical Communication mission is to improve the quality and effectiveness of technical communication worldwide. Hart edits the “Newsletter of Environmental, Safety, and Health Communications” as part of her work with the society.

     Hart's field consists of a combination of cognitive psychology, linguistics, visual design, and organizational communication to aid technical professionals in communicating with various audiences. She has developed models for written and spoken communication between engineers and technical, semi-technical and non-technical audiences. Her other specialties include audience analysis and strategies for collaborative writing.
