Short-Term Programs

Short-term programs are designed specifically for engineering students to further their education abroad, including several programs offering immersion opportunities in industry or research.

Applications open in September. Deadlines to apply:

  • Maymesters: Priority deadline November 1. Currently accepting applications for all programs; rolling admissions. If spots are available, rolling admissions will continue after the deadline.
  • Summer Programs: Priority deadline December 1. Currently accepting applications for all programs; rolling admissions may apply depending on the program. If spots are available, rolling admissions will continue after the deadline.

To begin your application:

  1. Self-authorize access to the application. Enter the year abroad (2019), semester and application type (Maymester or Summer Program) and the application code.
  2. To return to the application at any time after you have self-authorized access, log into MySAO.

Application Information

Be prepared to:

  • Pay the non-refundable $75 application fee on What I Owe
  • Enter the program code
  • Sign the financial responsibility statement
  • Sign the responsibilities of participation and code of conduct
  • Submit two short essays
  • Have a UT faculty member submit an online reference questionnaire
  • UT disciplinary check (automatically submitted, no action required)

Program Choices

The application asks for first and second choice programs. The second choice listed does not affect first choice acceptance decisions. If you do not have a second choice program, enter the first choice again.

  • Courses are UT spring courses
  • Students register during spring registration: October/November access period or January add/drop
  • Program application and course registration are two separate processes.


  • IEE will provide accepted students with registration information and next steps. Information will outline whether the department or the student will add the course. Students awaiting acceptance decisions into a program should not take action to register.
  • For undergraduate students, the Maymester course(s) does not affect the max hours registration limit
    • Report any issues to program coordinator

November 1: Currently accepting applications for all programs; rolling admissions. 

Mid November: Acceptance notifications (by Thanksgiving break). Applications received before the deadline will be reviewed and notified in advance.

December 10: Confirmation of participation deadline, if admitted prior to Dec. 10.

Jan. 14 - Jan. 18: Spring registration add/drop

  • Last chance to register for Maymester course(s).
  • Waitlist / Denied students drop course(s).
    • Waitlisted students instructed to re-register if later accepted.

February 20: Program fee deadline.

  • Can be deferred to financial aid
  • Last day to withdraw from program without penalty

February 21: Financial responsibility begins.

 Summer Programs

  • Registration, tuition and fees follows the standard UT summer schedule.
  • Reference the program registration instruction sheet from the program coordinator.
    • The PRIS is specific to each program.


December 1: Summer application deadline. Some programs may be rolling admissions.

Mid December: Acceptance notifications (by winter break)

January 25: Non-refundable program deposit due

March 1: Financial responsibility begins.

April 22 - May 3: Summer registration

  • IEE will provide you with instructions for course registration before the summer registration period. To complete registration, you must pay UT course tuition and fees by May 17th.

May 1: Program fee deadline (may be deferred to financial aid)

May 23:  Summer tuition payment deadline (undergraduates)

  • Pay by 4:59 p.m.
  • Non-payment triggers course drops
  • Financial aid students may defer to financial aid or take out a tuition loan


Students already receiving Cockrell School and non-UT Austin scholarships may carry over these funds for their semester abroad. Students already on financial aid may be able to apply for additional loans, if necessary. Students may also apply for additional study abroad scholarships, whether based on merit or need.


  • International Education Fee Scholarship (Spring & Maymester): Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSIST. Deadline October 1.
  • International Education Fee Scholarship (Summer): Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSISTDeadline February 15.
  • Maymester Scholarship - Engineering: Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSIST. Deadline November 1.
  • Summer Faculty-Led Scholarship - Engineering: Award description, eligibility criteria and applications are available on GLOBAL ASSISTDeadline December 1.
  • Benjamin A. Gilman Awards - For Pell Grant recipients: Apply at Gilman online. (Note: Maymesters are considered summer programs by Gilman). Early Deadline: October 2; Final Deadline: March 6.
  • Diversity Abroad: For economically disadvantaged, first-generation students, students with disabilities and ethnic and racially diverse students. Apply at Diversity Abroad online.
