K-12 Outreach Training & Certificate

Cockrell School of Engineering students and student organizations interested in volunteering for Engineering Thursdays at the Bullock Museum, Girl Day at UT Austin, Central Texas Discover Engineering and Explore UT are encouraged to participate in the K-12 Outreach & Role Model efforts facilitated by the Women in Engineering Program, the Engineering Ambassador Program and our local community. See below for how to plug in!


Step 1: Do Outreach

In order to achieve your certificate, you must do at least 15 hours of STEM outreach in the academic year. Find outreach opportunities on Texas STEM Connections or through volunteer for events in the UT community like Girl Day or Explore UT.

Step 2: Receive a Certificate

K-12 STEM Outreach Certificates are awarded by the Women in Engineering Program in May each year. Apply online.

Eligibility requirements for the K-12 STEM Outreach Certificate include:

  • Volunteering with at least 5 K-12 STEM outreach events or activities between June through May. Events/Activities that are >4 hours in length may count as 2 K-12 STEM events.
  • Cumulative volunteer hours in K-12 STEM outreach events or activities total at least 15 hours.
  • Currently enrolled in the Cockrell School of Engineering.

The early application deadline is April 15. The final application deadline is May 31. Certificates will be awarded on a rolling basis April 16 through June 1.

What do you get for achieving the certificate?  It’s a great resume builder for individuals (LOTS of companies do outreach and value the communication and leadership skills you gain by doing outreach). Enjoy providing great service to community - it's fun! Enhance your leadership and communication skills along the way.

Submit a request for classroom visits or engineering volunteers from the Cockrell School of Engineering (engineering students) and the Central Texas Discover Engineering volunteers (engineering professional in the local community).
