Headshot of Dr. Patricia ClaytonDr.Patricia Clayton is an Assistant Professor in the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department. She earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State in 2007 and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington in 2010. Dr. Clayton received her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington in 2013.

Dr. Clayton's technical interests revolve around innovative self-centering steel plate shear wall lateral force resisting systems for enhancing seismic performance of buildings.

Dr. Clayton describes her favorite thing about her work as being able to "teach and to show students how the theory that we learn in class relates to the real world. I remember having those "ah-ha" moments as a student whe I looked at everyday objects in a whole new way. All of a sudden, I looked at a light pole on the sideof the street and "saw" the forces that were transferred through the bolts at its base to resist the moment caused by the light hanging over the street. this was so exciting to me that I could "see" the engineering that went into the things I took for granted. I want to instill that excitement into students and future engineers".
