EOE Texas Research Program will be postponed this academic year 2022-2023. We will not open the upcoming application.
The Texas Research Experience program (TREX) offers many opportunities for upper-division students to learn about research. TREX:
- Further enhances the academic experience with undergraduate research
- Teaches students about careers in research in an academic setting
- Discusses the benefits of obtaining a graduate engineering degree
- Helps students become competitive graduate school applicants
Selected TREX participants demonstrate exceptional academic competence, leadership skills, independence and ingenuity and the ability to balance multiple responsibilities.

Selected TREX participants:
- Perform 8-10 hours of research/lab work each week
- Enroll in a one-hour weekly course, 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Wednesdays for the fall and spring semesters
- Attend weekly meetings, workshops and round-tables
- Complete an abstract, report, poster and PowerPoint presentation
- Submit and present a final report.
- Attend the EOE Excellence Awards Banquet
- Possibly present research at conferences
In return, TREX participants receive:
- Exposure to industry representatives and faculty members
- Valuable research experience
- Valuable experience in preparing papers and presentations
- Monthly stipend totaling $1,500 per semester for two semesters
- A competitive edge over other graduate school applicants
How to apply:
TREX students must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Be enrolled in the Cockrell School during the fall and spring semesters
- Complete at least 45 credit hours by September 1 with at least 30 hours completed at The University of Texas at Austin
- Receive an A or B in all technical labs taken
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
- Enroll in a mandatory one-hour weekly course for both semesters, Wednesdays, 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

We would like for you to take a look at the EOE SRA/TREX Partnerships list to view names, research areas and a sampling of possible research projects from professors interested in partnering with TREX/SRA students.
You can also review your engineering department's website to become familiar with various engineering faculty members and their research areas. Placement with the professor of your choice is not guaranteed.
